Our upcoming meeting on April 21st is fast approaching, and I am currently mulling over a few selections. The first is D. Gray-man and the second is Last Exile. Both shows are vastly different, and both take a little while to really get interesting. However, the payoffs are similarly grand. If either of these titles interest you, leave a comment or suggest your own.

Teens from ages 12 to 18 from all over the Mesquite area are invited to attend. You do not need a library card to attend, although we would love to sign you up for one. Teen Anime Club this Thursday!

The Mesquite Public Library's Teen Anime Club will meet this Thursday at 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. to watch the new movie, "Ponyo". Meet us a little before 5:30 p.m. to meet all our regular members and chat a bit then we'll watch Hayao Miyazaki's new masterpiece, "Ponyo". We also have a NEW movie projector which is awesomely bright and colorful and widescreen. It'll be great!

Soul Eaters is rated 13 or 14+, there are ghosts, and spirits and fantasy-type creatures. Humans wielding weapons called Soul Eaters and learning how to use them to purify spirits and send them on into the next life or something. :)

I originally thought that we would be taking a Thanksgiving break this year. However, it turns out that we'll be able to go ahead and have our regular meeting on the 28th, the Saturday after Thanksgiving (if you aren't too stuffed with turkey leftovers and pumpkin pie to come on up here.)

Manga Book Club Meeting, 10/31/09

The Manga Book Club will have its next meeting on Saturday, Oct. 31--Halloween! If you want to come in costume, feel free. We'll be watching the next 3 episodes of Fullmetal Alchemist, starting with episode 19--my personal favorite of the series so far. It features an absolutely awesome showdown between Mustang and Lust and I could watch it over and over again. Episodes 20 and 21 are pretty awesome, too.

Our next Mesquite Teen Anime Club is Thursday, September 24, 2009, at 5:30 p.m in the front meeting room at the Main Library. We will be screening: Bleach, the movie 2: The Diamond Dust Rebellion.

Captain of squad 10, Toshiro Hitsugaya's past catches up with him. Someone from his past who has the same Zanpakto returns from the dead. And what is it about the Central 46? Central 46 did a lot of things in the past that now seem to be catching up to them in the series and in the movies. First, the Bounts... then the Brotherhood of Darkness from the first movie.. now this? And they aren't even around anymore since former captain of squad 5, Sosuke Aizen, assassinated them.

Anyway, the plot thickens, so see the second movie of the Bleach lexicon, "The Diamond Dust Rebellion" at the Main Library, dubbed in English.

Manga Book Club Meeting, 9/19/09

The Manga Book Club will have its next meeting on Saturday, Sept. 19. However, we will not get started at our regular time of 4:00 p.m.

As part of the library's Customer Appreciation Month, we will be having a performance by Boocoos the Clown on the 19th from 3:30-4:15. The Manga Book Club will start after Boocoos' program.

Boocoos the Clown is one of the best clowns I have ever seen and I always enjoy watching him perform. You're all welcome to come to his program before the meeting.

Manga Book Club Meeting, 8/8/2009

Well, we're still trying to come up with the best procedure for streaming the Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood episodes from the computer through the projector. We are getting better--we watched two episodes this past week. The next episode is the one with Nina and Alexander (sniff, sniff.)

While we were waiting for the episodes to fill the buffer so we could watch without hiccups and interruptions, we watched some other short videos--like the Potter Puppet Pals "The Mysterious Ticking Noise" which I think is the most clever of the videos that Neil Cicierega has done.

BTW, we are in the planning process for a new program starting in January for 6th grade and up called "Get in the Game." It would be on alternating Thursdays at 4:00 or 4:30. We are looking at getting the proper equipment for Dance Dance Revolution, and have discussed board games like Monopoly, Clue, or Trivial Pursuit. I'd like some input from you guys as to the sort of things you'd like to see--board games, video games, or something else. (And before you ask, we will probably not be getting any shoot-em-up or Grand Theft Auto type games. DDR and Guitar Hero are much more our style.

Anyway, our next meeting will be on Saturday, August 8, from 4:00-6:00. We'll talk about manga, or possible games, or maybe just have a bit of silly chaos like we did last time, and then watch a couple of episodes of Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood--three if we're lucky.

If for any reason we decide not to add them to our collection, they will go to the Friends of the Library booksale--that way they can still benefit the library.

Manga Book Club Meeting, 7/25/09

The Manga Book Club will have its next meeting on Saturday, July 25, from 4:00 to 6:00 at the Mesquite North Branch Library, 2600 Oates Dr.

So we started watching Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood at the last meeting. We had a few technical problems--first time running a computer signal through the projector and all. The main thing I learned is that I need to start running the episodes at the start of the meeting so that the buffer fills and we can watch them without hiccups and stutters. We only got to watch one episode, but we'll do better next time.

I got some new mangas in, including the last two volumes of Fruits Basket. I loved the ending of this series, especially the very sweet last image. We got a donation a few weeks ago, but Summer Reading Club has kept me too busy to do a "new books" post. I'll try to get that done before too long.

Since it is so new, it has not yet been dubbed, so we'll be watching it in Japanese with English subtitles.

I'm very excited to announce that we have gotten permission from Funimation to show the new Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood which is currently only available online. We'll be watching the streaming anime either from the Funimation website or on Hulu (because we're aliens!) That will start at our July 11 meeting.

Until then, we'll be watching the last few episodes of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya.

Summer Teen Cafe

This summer there is a new set of programs just for teens called "Summer Teen Cafe." These programs are strictly for teens aged 12 to 18. There will be refreshments at all the programs. Please see our website for more details at http://www.cityofmesquite.com/library/adult.php

On Thursday, June 25th at 5:30 p.m. the program will be "All Things Japanese." We will show some anime, as we usually do during our Teen Anime Club, and there will be some treats and free wooden chopsticks.

A little while ago, I started a blog on the Dallas Morning News' Neighborsgo website. I'm posting short reviews of manga volumes as I read them. I'd love to have some help. Write a review of something you're reading, and bring it to the next meeting.

The Manga Book Club will have its next meeting on Saturday, May 2, from 4:00 to 6:00 at the Mesquite North Branch Library, 2600 Oates Dr. We started a new anime series, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. What a change of pace this is from Blood +! The first episode was made as if it was an amateur movie made by a high school club. It took a while to catch on (for me at least) but it was hilarious. The funniest part of the show is the narration.

A little while ago, I started a blog on the Dallas Morning News' Neighborsgo website. I'm posting short reviews of manga volumes as I read them. I'd love to have some help. Write a review of something you're reading, and bring it to the next meeting.

The next Mesquite Teen Anime Club will be held at 5:30 p.m. C.S.T. on Thursday, January 22nd, 2009, at the Mesquite Public Library at 300 W. Grubb Drive.

At this meeting, we will need to decide what series or combination of series to watch from February to May and during the Summer Reading Club this year. I need more time to ask for permissions from now on. We will be watching Lucky Star, Volume 1.

Manga Book Club Meeting 1/10/2009

The Manga Book Club will have its next meeting on Saturday, January 10, from 4:00 to 6:00 at the Mesquite North Branch Library, 2600 Oates Dr.

After our Christmas meeting, when we watched Tokyo Godfathers, I noticed that the old western, Three Godfathers, was playing on Turner Classic movies--actually 2 different versions of it. The 1948 version starred John Wayne and was directed by John Ford. The 1936 version starred Lewis Stone and Walter Brennan. Apparently John Ford also made a silent version, but it wasn't being aired. I liked the 1936 version better, mainly because I liked the character played by Lewis Stone. It was easy to see that these two westerns were the inspiration for Tokyo Godfathers, but the anime did add a lot to the characterization of the three godfathers, as well as the parents of the lost baby. It was really interesting to see them all so close together.

Anyway, we'll be back to our regular format at our next meeting, and watching the next episodes of Blood +.

Manga Book Club Meeting 12/20/2008

The Manga Book Club will have its next meeting on Saturday, December 20, from 4:00 to 6:00 at the Mesquite North Branch Library, 2600 Oates Dr.

At our last meeting, some members suggested we do something different for Christmas. Someone suggested the feature length anime Tokyo Godfathers which has three things going for it: 1) it has a Christmas theme; 2) it is currently available from Netflix; and 3) it is covered by the library's site license. So, that's what we're going to watch at our Christmas meeting.

Tokyo Godfathers is the story of three misfit roommates who find an abandoned baby on Christmas Eve and try to find the parents. It is rated PG-13, and is in Japanese with English subtitles. (Sorry, no English dub is available.)

We're back to our regular format--so be ready to talk about the books you're reading. At our last meeting, we talked about Slaughterhouse Five, Vampire Kisses, Life as We Knew It, and The Dead & the Gone--and none of them are manga! During our second hour, we will be watching episodes 6, 7 and maybe 8 of Blood +.

In my recent inventory of our manga section, I found out that the series with the highest circulation at the North Branch Library is Skip-Beat!, followed closely by Love*Com. Would you have expected those? The full top ten are: Skip-Beat!, Love*Com, Vampire Knight, Aishiteruze Baby, Angel Diary, Crossroad, + Anima, Naruto, Can't Lose You, and Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle.

Just a heads-up--we will NOT have a meeting on November 22, the Saturday before Thanksgiving. (I am going to a family reunion in California.) We will resume our meetings on Saturday, December 6.

Teen Anime Club in November

The next Teen Anime club meeting at the Main Mesquite Public Library will be on the third Thursday, November 20th at 5:30 p.m. We will be watching "Ouran High School Host Club" the first volume.

Haruhi Fujioka is a scholarship student at an upscale, ritzy high school academy; because she cannot afford the school's uniform, she wears clothes which causes her to be mistaken for a boy. She wanders into a music room at school and accidentally knocks over and breaks a vase worth approximately $80,000 U.S. The room is the club room of the Ouran High School Host Club, a group of gorgeous high school boys who spend their time flirting with girls. The president of the club mistakes her for a boy and in order to work off the cost of the broken vase, Haruhi is made a "dog" or mascot or gopher of the club, doing menial tasks for the club members.

Teen Anime Club on October 16!

Manga Book Club meeting

This will be the last of our Fahrenheit 451 meetings. Any art work that you've done for the exhibit needs to be turned in at this meeting. We can do some finishing touches but everything should be ready to send to the Arts Center. BTW, if you missed this last meeting, Mr. Templeton brought us copies of the book and an audio CD; I still have some of these at the library so you can ask me for them.

Finally, we voted on our next anime series and I have sent in the request for screening permission. Depending on how long it takes to get a response, we may begin watching at this meeting. Manga Book Club meeting

The Manga Book Club will have its next meeting on Saturday, August 16, from 4:00 to 6:00 at the Mesquite North Branch Library, 2600 Oates Dr.

Last time we started working on our Fahrenheit 451 artwork, making sketches and reading some selections from the book. We looked at the chief's explanation of how the society evolved, Bradbury's afterword that gave some of his reasons for writing the books, and the scene with Mildred's friends and their callous attitudes towards their husbands and children. We found out that it worked best to do this for about an hour, and then move on to more general discussion about mangas, anime, YA books, and movies. If you've missed the last few meetings, don't worry--we've got two months to work on this so we'll cover some things more than once.

Teen Anime Club - August 28th

On Thursday, August 28th at 5:30 p.m., the Main Library in Mesquite will be screening the phenomenal "The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya" Volume 1.

Haruhi is not interested in "normal" human beings. She is interested only in aliens, time travelers, and ESPers. After a quick chat with her classmate, Kyon, she starts a club she names the SOS Brigade. The SOS Brigade is on the hunt for people who have had strange things happen to them; Haruhi is obsessed with this. She recruits Yuki Nagato simply because she was sitting in the room where Haruhi wanted to hold her club meetings. She recruits Mikuru Asahina because, well, she would make a good "mascot" in her bunny suit. And Haruhi recruits a "mysterious transfer student" Itsuki because, well, he is the token "mysterious transfer student."

This silly, funny comedy is just what the doctor ordered to get rid of those end-of-summer-school-just-started-again blues.

Teen Anime Club

We will be screening the first volume (the 1st 5 episodes) of "Tactics" on Thursday, July 24th beginning at 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Also, at this meeting, we will be taking nominations and volunteers for the Teen Anime Club President, Vice-President and Secretary. These three offices will be decided at the September meeting on Thursday, September 25th at 5:30 p.m. The president will be responsible for holding the meetings: helping to decide what anime to watch at the meetings, and for recruiting new members. The vice-president will preside over the meetings if the president is not in attendance and for recruiting new members. The secretary will take the meeting minutes, have them typed up, and include them in a newsletter for each month as well as recruit new members.

Each member, including officers, will be able to nominate and vote on anime to watch each month. Every member, officer and non-officer, will be responsible for recruiting new members and will recommend anime for the library to buy for the collection.

We will also be interested in members' activities during the year at anime conventions, and talking about different activities to make the Teen Anime Club more popular and active in the city.

At the next Teen Anime Club meeting, we will be deciding which three animes we will be showing at the next three meetings in June, July and August, so please attend to have your voice heard!

(Sorry, but this includes those requests for D.N.Angel, Naruto, Bleach... We already have these in the library so let's watch something new, 'K? ;)

There are so many other ones out there.. also, let's try to stick to anime that is not available on TV or Cable/Satellite. And we want to get something that the library can show: anime rated 13 + or Teen only. No Older Teens + and no 16+ anime. We have to think of the teenagers who are 13 and up also.

Manga Art Class

Volume summaries:

Volume 1
Anya is excited to be going to a new school, Lucrece High. She's been trying to transfer into this school because it has an excellent reputation for sports. She really wants to get on a team--either basketball or soccer. She makes some friends right away, but unfortunately she also makes an enemy--Marie. Anya is also upset to learn that Leon attends Lucrese High. The two of them had been in elementary school together and Leon did something that Anya thought was unforgiveable.

When Anya tries to join a sports team, she discovers that Marie is captain of the girls' basketball team. So much for basketball. It turns out that soccer is not much better, since the soccer team is being coached by a student who doesn't let girls play. Determined to play something, Anya and her friends form their own soccer team. To attract more attention in the hopes of gathering a full roster of players, Filiz (a girl into goth and cosplay) designs goth inspired team uniforms. They manage to get Delia, a 12th grader, to agree to coach them, despite the fact that Delia is Marie's best friend. Which will be more important to Marie--her friendship with Delia or her dislike of Anya?

Volume 2
Anya's team has to play a skirmish against the regular soccer team before the principal will give his final okay. The team is anxious and discouraged about playing when they've barely had a chance to practice. Delia is missing--a victim of Marie's sabotage. Anya is unhappy that Leon has joined the team, though she admits that they need him. And it's raining! What more could go wrong?

Despite their troubles, they begin to work together as a team, which is what the principal really wanted to see. And we finally find out what Leon did that was so unforgiveable.

At the next anime club meeting, we will be watching the first volume of
"School Rumble." Here is the info:

What is it about?
The heroine, Tenma Tsukamoto, a second year high school girl, has a crush on Oji Karasuma, a stonefaced eccentric. Tenma finds it difficult (to say the least) to confess her love to him. Complications arise when Kenji Harima, the male protagonist and a motorcycle-driving bad-boy delinquent, realizes that he has a developed a crush on Tenma. He also has difficulty confessing his love. The attempts of the two characters to confess their respective loves are running gags seen throughout the series.

Harukaze Bitter Bop by Court Betten

The North Branch has book volume 1

Volume 1: This is only the first volume, so I'm not quite sure where it is going. It's the start of a new school year. Hasumi is headed towards school where he hopes to start with a clean slate, but as he approaches the train station, he sees a large young man who smiles at him and then jumps in front of the train. Hasumi freaks out. Just then, Kaede Tsubak pops up--she, too, is also a high school student heading for the first day of school, but she's also an undercover detective, who immediately accuses Hasumi of killing the other man. And then Hasumi really freaks out because the man, who by all rights should be dead, gets up. He says his name is Souza of the North Wind, but other than that he can't remember anything about himself. It wasn't the train accident that gave him amnesia--he stepped in front of the train to try to cure it.

From a note at the end of the book, I gather that this is filled with in-jokes that refer back to other very popular series--such as Dragonball. Since I haven't read a lot of those series, most of the jokes have gone straight over my head. However, I liked this enough to want to keep reading it.
